The Secular Campus Mission Field
Here are a few characteristics of the Secular University Mission Field. These statistics were reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac, August, 2001.

• There were 14,978,000 students enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States in 2000. This number is projected to grow to 17.7 million by 2011.
• There were 516,400 foreign students enrolled in 2000.
• According to the 2000 Census, 62.9 percent of high school graduates attend college.
• In 1999, there were 41,140 doctoral degrees conferred, 22% to students on temporary visas.

The top 10 foreign countries sending students to study in the United States in 1999 were:
1) China 54,466
2) Japan 46,872
3) India 42,337
4) Republic of Korea 41,191
5) Taiwan 29,234
6) Canada 23,554
7) Indonesia 11,300
8) Thailand 10,983
9) Mexico 10,607
10) Turkey 10,100

• 1,828,507 Full-time employees in Colleges and Universities in Fall of 1997.
• 568,719 of those employees were faculty members.
• 923,997 Total part-time employees in Colleges and Universities in the Fall of 1997.
• 568,719 of those employees were faculty members.
• The average salary of all faculty members, all ranks, all areas was $58,700.
• 33.3% of faculty responding to a survey are not involved in community or public service.
• 53.8 % are involved in one to four hours of community service per week.
